Crawford council rejects new American Tower contract seeking 50-year term

Council members voted unanimously on April 22 to disapprove a proposed contract with American Tower after the company declined the city's request to limit the lease to 25 years. City Attorney Edmunds told the council the draft contract sought a 50-year term; Mayor Shane Norman and council members said a half-century term would tie up the site until 2075 and could produce less near-term revenue than the existing arrangement.
Councilman Christopher Dean said he had discussed a potential offer with the company but reported they had not provided paperwork. April Grant moved to disapprove the proposed contract; the motion passed with all council members voting in favor.
City Attorney Edmunds said the council could request additional insurance or other contract changes from American Tower, but the council's action at this meeting was to reject the new contract as presented.
