Crawford library requests part-time aide after 139% jump in patronage; council defers decision

Presenting on behalf of the library board, Lisa Stocker said the library’s monthly patronage had increased 139 percent and that the Friends of the Library will fund the summer reading program. The board asked the council to approve a part-time library aide at $13.50 per hour and to extend hours from the current noon–6 p.m. Monday–Friday to 10 a.m.–6 p.m. Monday–Saturday.
City Clerk/Treasurer Teri Miller and Attorney Edmunds cautioned that the request should be reconciled with the city’s current budget. Mayor April Grant and council members asked the library board and City Clerk to meet this week to review budget details and bring back accurate figures. No vote was taken; Mayor Grant indicated the matter will return to a future council agenda after budget review.
Library representatives said the request is driven by program demand and the board’s community survey results. The Friends of the Library have committed to fund summer programming, but ongoing payroll and hourly staffing costs were left for the city budget review to determine.
Next steps: the library board will meet with the City Clerk to present detailed budget figures; council will consider the position in a subsequent meeting once the city’s financials are verified.
