Highway department reports February spending, labor trends and fuel sales

The Marquette County Highway Committee reviewed February financial and operational reports at its March 17 meeting.
Brenda Petersen, highway accountant, reported RMA costs for February totaled $93,510.05, primarily for winter maintenance and roadside vegetation, representing 24.03% of the department’s total budget spent year-to-date. County costs for February were $151,423, including $71,841 charged to county maintenance for patching, brushing and training and $79,582 for winter maintenance. Petersen said the department’s remaining budget for 2026 is $2,769,033.
Brian Trebiatowski, highway department staff, summarized work totals: townships recorded $157,458 of work in February (labor $65,944), villages and the city reported $1,851 of work (labor $52). He noted that year-to-date county labor is up 22.12% versus the five-year average and up 4.35% versus last year; construction seasonal work is up 74.25% while winter maintenance is down 30.24% compared with the five-year average.
Trebiatowski also reported interdepartmental fuel sales of 4,217 gallons in February and 9,068 gallons year-to-date for 2026. Average February prices including state tax were $2.5673 per gallon for unleaded and $3.1299 per gallon for diesel.
The committee was told staffing has been at full strength since December and that LTE apprentices are working part time with a 1,200-hour cap over a rolling 12-month period. There were no voucher inquiries and the meeting adjourned at 9:20 a.m.
