The Select Board discussed the upcoming retirement of the elected clerk and the planned transition of the clerk position from elected to appointed status, and agreed to post the clerk job while continuing to evaluate deputy staffing and office-hours structure.
Board members said Heather (the current clerk) has indicated she will retire at the end of her term; the board intends to post a clerk position budgeted at 40 hours a week to align with regional practice. Members emphasized the need to plan training so a new appointee can be prepared before July 1 and maintain continuity for election and tax-collection responsibilities.
The board debated whether to consolidate the deputy clerk role with the administrative assistant and whether the town office should move to two full-time positions plus part-time support. Members asked staff to obtain MMA salary benchmarking and to consult neighboring towns (Belgrade, Reedfield and others) and KVCOG resources to identify successful staffing models. The board agreed to a working session to finalize hours, benefits and job descriptions.
On online services, members said more transactions (boats, trailers, dog licenses and property-tax payments) should move online where the system allows, recognizing some registrations (new boat registrations and certain new transactions) currently require in-person visits and the outgoing elected clerk controls those systems until July 1. The board discussed using training funds to prepare a pre-July trainee and noted that a deputy can be appointed by the current clerk if both parties agree and the budget allows.
Board members scheduled follow-up work, including benchmarking and a working session next week to refine job descriptions, budget figures and implementation timing.
