The Tooele County Council on June 16 approved updated public‑defender agreements for district, drug, justice and juvenile courts that expand service expectations tied to an increase in the defender budget.
Corey, who presented the agreements, said the funding increase allowed the office to codify practices already in use: attorneys will be asked to stay involved through probation, assist clients seeking sentence reductions, and provide more coordinated representation when trials are large. “We’re making attorneys stay on cases longer…get these people all the way through probation,” Corey said, adding that the changes are intended to reduce recidivism and improve outcomes.
The agreements also encourage a team approach — requiring second‑chair coverage on significant trials — and add accountability measures such as continuing education and performance reviews. Council members praised the CJC (criminal justice coordinating) process for centralizing resources and linking defendants to verified treatment programs.
Councilman Thomas moved approval of the public‑defender agreements; the motion passed unanimously.
