Allegany County committee approves landfill fee increases and limits large-item disposal to landfill

The Allegany County Public Works Committee on June 3 approved a package of changes to landfill and transfer-station user fees, raising the tipping fee for loose garbage, commercial haulers and C&D to $90 per ton and increasing the minimum tipping/scaling fee to $45. The changes take effect July 1, 2026.
Deputy County Superintendent of Public Works Dean Scholes presented the proposal, which also adjusts per-item fees (for example, passenger-size tires from $4 to $5) and clarifies that large items such as couches, mattresses and box springs will only be accepted at the county landfill rather than at transfer stations. Scholes said the changes respond to an observed 20–25% increase in large-scale solid waste compared with last year.
County Superintendent Thomas Windus told the committee the fee revisions are intended to better align costs with recent increases in volume. Legislator William Meunier asked whether existing hang tags would continue to work; Windus said the hang-tag program remains unchanged. Legislator John Ricci asked about projected revenue; Windus said he did not have an exact figure at the meeting.
The committee approved the fee changes on a motion recorded as carried; the transcript notes Legislator K. LaForge abstained. The county stated the fee changes will be effective July 1, 2026.
Next steps: staff will prepare any necessary public notices and the Solid Waste Advisory Committee will supply supporting cost figures for related permit decisions later this year.
