The Waukesha Board of Public Works voted April 17 to award the Green Meadow Drive and Cascade Drive utility and street improvement project to Wandell Contractors for $2,195,761.99. Public Works staff recommended moving forward with the low bid after receiving three competitive bids.
Public Works staff said the project is primarily concrete work with some underground utility work and that Wandell will serve as the general contractor and subcontract specialty trades. "We did receive 3, very competitive bids on this project," the Public Works staff member said, noting the low bid and that all bidders would have been suitable partners.
Committee members discussed contractor experience and the difference between general-contractor-led work and projects that depend heavily on subcontractors. One Committee member said previous work had been slowed by general-contractor crews on another project, while staff clarified that this project will rely heavily on the contractor's concrete crews.
A motion to award the contract to Wandell Contractors carried on a Board vote. The contract award authorizes the city to proceed to contracting and to schedule the construction phases identified in the project packet.
