Alta general manager announces retirement; ski-area and infrastructure updates given to council

The Alta general manager gave the Town Council a seasonal operations update during the June 17 meeting and announced his planned retirement. The manager said team members are in the process of vetting applicants for a successor and that applications will be accepted through July 1.

Operations update: The manager reported that, statewide, visitation was down last year but Alta saw resilient numbers tied to late-season visitation and snowpack. Multiple capital and maintenance projects are underway or nearing completion: final grading and dust-control for the summer road, campground improvements (including ADA ramps and two new campsites), Grizzly restroom construction (including sewer crossing work), and snowmaking utility upgrades that will support next winter’s operations. The manager also noted ongoing coordination with Rocky Mountain Power on overhead line replacement and related conduit work.

Staffing and succession: The general manager said the Alta board is leading the hiring process; the GM expects to remain involved in selecting and onboarding a successor and anticipates an overlap period to ensure operational continuity.

The GM’s planned departure introduces a near-term leadership transition that the council said should be managed to preserve institutional knowledge and relationships with town staff and stakeholders.
