Police Chief David Pernice updated Union City Borough Council on department operations and regional coordination during the June 25 meeting.
Chief Pernice reviewed the May 2024 police report and said he had contacted neighboring departments about fundraising at recent golf scrambles, reporting Corry raised about $16,000 and Warren raised between $18,000 and $20,000. He told council he is completing a background check required by Civil Service rules and hopes to have it finished by July 5, 2024.
On event coverage, the chief said the department will have expanded presence at the French Creek Festival: Erie County Detectives will fund overtime and the borough expects 2–3 officers from the Erie County Courthouse to assist. Pernice said he also requested additional coverage from Corry PSP but had not yet received a response.
Pernice described work with Lexipol to update departmental policies and said he is removing policies that are not needed; the solicitor is reviewing the drafts. "They can search plates on the system and assist in an investigation anywhere in the country. It helps to better protect the community as well," Pernice said when describing license plate reader capability later in the meeting.
Council asked clarifying questions but raised no objections to the chief’s operational updates. The department will proceed with the background-check process and policy revisions, returning to council if solicitor review raises substantive changes requiring action.
