Batavia athletics wins state relays, district officials tout turf project to cut cancellations

Batavia City School District athletics leaders reported a successful spring and previewed facility upgrades intended to reduce weather-related cancellations.
"It was a great year again this year," said Joel Reid, the district's director of health, physical education and athletics, as he and athletics assistant Brennan Briggs reviewed team milestones. Batavia teams won multiple sectional championships across boys' and girls' indoor and outdoor track programs, the girls' 4x100 and 4x400 relays earned New York State titles, and individual athletes produced state-level top finishes.
Briggs highlighted program details and individual achievements, and Reid presented participation data for grades 7–12 showing a steady percentage of students participating in at least one sport: 52% in 2022–23, 52.5% in 2023–24, 50.5% in 2024–25 and 53% in 2025–26. Reid said the district's absolute student counts have decreased, which affects raw team sizes even as participation rates hold roughly steady.
Reid and Briggs also noted operational challenges this spring: "47 different events were rescheduled this spring alone" because of weather. On the district's planned turf project, Reid said, "It's going to be absolutely a huge benefit to our athletics programs" and described how turf will allow earlier outdoor practice starts, stacked practices and fewer cancellations. The presentation also mentioned planned huddle camera systems for baseball, softball and soccer to support coaching and scouting.
Board members asked about recruiting younger participants and eligibility rules; Reid said the district is exploring earlier outreach and that an eligibility program and coach/teacher coordination have helped maintain scholar-athlete performance and attendance. Reid summarized scholar-athlete data: 264 individual scholar-athlete recognitions across seasons and 87% of teams qualifying as scholar-athlete teams this year.
No formal vote was required for the athletics presentation; facility projects such as the turf installation were described as “on the horizon” and will require separate capital approvals.
