Gail, speaking for the Friends of the Library, reported that Sandy Harley from the Ocean Shores Food Bank presented an update showing a sharp rise in demand and increased purchases. "They purchased $130,000 worth of food and fruits and vegetables," Gail said, and added that households using the pantry rose from 685 in 2021 to 1,253 in 2025.
Gail described how the food bank operates like a small grocery store so clients can select items, and noted that pet food and children's books are also provided. She said most clients are from Ocean Shores, while some come from Hoquiam and nearby beach areas. "The clients all end up with several bags of food," Gail said, and that some users visit only once or twice.
The Friends' report included operational details: limited on-site capacity (about eight to 10 people inside at a time), increased reliance on purchased food in addition to donations, and a plan for a new building behind the Lutheran church (the church donated half the property cost and the Lions Club provided matching support). Gail said the pantry is seeking additional grants and donations to expand operations and reduce waiting times.
The Friends also noted distribution of children's books through the pantry (about 1,400 last year and 350 through May this year). No formal board action was taken on the food-bank update during the meeting.
The Friends' presentation will be followed up in future community outreach and fundraising efforts; the board adjourned after routine business.
