The Allendale Charter Township Planning Commission on May 18, 2026 approved a site plan for a 5,970-square-foot Wesco gas station and retail store with a drive-through, with conditions addressing traffic and landscaping.
Commissioner Bruce Zeinstra announced a recusal at the start of the item because his firm represents Wesco locations in the state; he left the dais for the discussion and vote. Chairperson Joe Jacquot opened the public hearing; no members of the public spoke. Matt Cole presented the Wesco plans and staff reviewed documents submitted with the application. Township staff confirmed there is no mortgage on the property after a reciprocal-document review by township legal counsel and confirmation from JJ Westgate.
Commissioners discussed the Traffic Impact Study, including concerns about illegal U-turns in the area, and considered the township engineer and Ottawa County Road Commission’s review of whether the roadway network can support the proposed use. Commissioner Todd Bronson moved to approve the site plan, finding it meets the ordinance’s special use and site plan review standards, and listed conditions that: (1) the roadway network must be able to support the use as outlined by the Ottawa County Road Commission and the Township Engineer in relation to the Traffic Impact Study; and (2) the submitted landscape plan must be revised to match the site plan. Commissioner Rick Westerling seconded and the motion carried 3-0 with Commissioner Zeinstra recused. Commissioner Zeinstra returned to the meeting after the vote.
What the conditions mean: final approval is contingent on confirmation from the Ottawa County Road Commission and the Township Engineer that the local roadway network can adequately accommodate the project; the developer must also submit a landscape plan that matches the approved site plan prior to final sign-off.
Next steps: the developer must satisfy the roadway and landscape conditions before receiving final permits or building permits for the site.
