Allendale planning commission considers text amendment to outdoor wood boiler rules

The Allendale Charter Township Planning Commission discussed on May 4 a proposed text amendment that would change how outdoor wood boilers are regulated in commercial and industrial districts.
Commission members reviewed striking the phrase “prohibited on commercial or industrial use” from code section 470-23.22 and examined language in subsections D, E and F with a view to consolidating those provisions. The commission discussed technical conditions to limit impacts: a minimum setback of 100 feet from every property line and a required chimney height of 15 feet above ground.
Staff member Greg Ransford was asked to draft the proposed amendment language and prepare a public hearing notice. The commission recorded that a formal public hearing will be scheduled before any ordinance change is adopted.
Why it matters: changing the zoning text would alter where outdoor wood boilers may be installed and establish technical requirements that would apply in commercial and industrial zones. The commission did not vote on an amendment at the May 4 meeting; discussion was limited to drafting language and scheduling a hearing.
Next steps: staff will prepare the text amendment and public hearing notice for the commission’s consideration at a future meeting.
