Commission on Aging to research grants for volunteer background checks and funds survey of seniors' needs

Commissioners on the Town of Marlborough’s Commission on Aging discussed programs and planning priorities at their June 16 meeting, including grant research for a volunteer‑matching program, funding for a seniors’ needs survey, goal setting and a series of upcoming community events.
Senior Services Director Shoshana Merced described UR Community Cares, a program that pairs community volunteers with older adults, and said background checks are required for both volunteers and older adult participants. Merced asked the commission to investigate grant opportunities for 2027 that could cover the cost of those background checks.
Chair Peggy Golfin reported the senior center received $1,500 to conduct a survey of seniors’ needs and wants; commissioners said the survey will help set priorities and inform 1‑, 3‑ and 5‑year goals. Golfin asked members to bring goal ideas to the July 21 meeting and said subcommittees will be formed to address specific goals. Golfin also noted the senior population has increased in recent years and that the center will eventually need more space.
Staff also outlined upcoming outreach and fundraising activities: reserving a table for Marlborough Day on Aug. 23 (staff will confirm table cost and prepare materials and volunteers), planning a Townwide Tag Sale on Oct. 3 with a donations table at the senior center, and holding a Health Expo on Oct. 16 combined with a vaccine clinic inviting local partners such as Chatham Health and UConn Health.
