Select board approves farm machinery warning sign on Orchard Drive after resident safety appeal

Board members discussed whether to install a seasonal 'farm machinery' sign (which, per guidance, would normally be removed when activity is not occurring) or a 'hidden drive' sign. Some members said hidden-drive signs are often ignored, while others noted a farm-machinery sign could require seasonal removal. The board voted unanimously to amend the motion to specify a sign picturing farm machinery and then unanimously approved placement of that sign at the designated Orchard Drive location.
Tiffany and others weighed in about enforcement and the sign’s placement relative to the speed limit. The board recorded that Main Local Roads had recommended a hidden-drive sign, but members agreed that a farm-machinery pictogram would better alert drivers to the agricultural activity.
The select board directed staff to finalize the exact sign design and the location near the hill where Oakley reported the safety issue.
