Council asks planning commission to draft ban on data centers across zoning districts

On June 17 the Suffolk City Council voted 7–0 to ask the Planning Commission to draft an amendment to the Unified Development Ordinance that would prohibit data centers as a use in all zoning districts.
Council members said the directive reflects experience with emerging industries outpacing existing policy, and that the commission’s work would allow staff and council to consider environmental, infrastructure and tax implications before any future data-center proposals proceed.
The motion was presented and supported on the council floor without recorded public opposition during the meeting. Staff will return recommended code language to the Planning Commission and ultimately back to the council for public hearings and action.
