During public comment the commission heard two community-oriented updates: a nonprofit announced approval for a community garden project and the commission swore in its new youth commissioner.
Patrick Carpenter, vice president of Rio Vista Roots, told the commission the group was approved by the planning commission to start a community garden at 3rd and Saint Gertrude. The project will begin with 12 raised beds (8 feet by 4 feet) and aims to grow to 34 beds with a greenhouse and apiary over time. "We just were approved to start our first project, a community garden on 3rd and Saint Gertrude," Carpenter said, asking the commission to note and welcome the initiative.
Later in the meeting the commission administered an oath of office to Samaya Hawley for the position of Youth/Student Commissioner for the Park and Recreation Commission. The oath was read publicly and Hawley repeated and accepted the obligation.
The garden announcement and the youth-commissioner swearing-in were presented as informational items; no council action was required at the meeting.
