Commission recommends Sustainable Solano tree-planting grant to council, prefers Airport Road site

Sustainable Solano would provide trees, hand tools and a community planting event with high-school interns and volunteers; public works agreed to donate staff time to dig holes for larger trees. Staff said the grant currently has $1,983 remaining, which could fund roughly 13–30 trees depending on species and size.
Commissioners asked about species selection, noting the city’s pending tree policy will define an approved tree list; staff said public works will choose species consistent with the tree policy, which is scheduled to go to council for approval.
Multiple commissioners and public commenters voiced support for planting along Airport Road to provide shade along a long, exposed stretch; the commission moved and seconded a recommendation to send the proposal to council with that preference. The motion passed on a unanimous roll call.
Next steps: staff will package the commission’s recommendation and forward the Sustainable Solano proposal and the commission’s site preference to City Council for final approval; the choice of tree species and exact tree counts will depend on the city tree policy and grant capacity.
