Strasburg considers JEDD expansion as fabrication shop eyes utilities hookup

At the Oct. 15 meeting Jeff Smith told council that Franklin Township representative Brent Metzger suggested distributing interest revenue from JEDD funds to the village and township. Smith said the topic is under consideration and asked council to think about the request.
Smith also reported that a fabrication shop is interested in joining the JEDD and connecting to village utilities. Legal Counsel Terry Seeberger said he had spoken with the property owner and explained that extending utilities along Harwalk would require votes by both the village and the township and that, historically, entities joining the JEDD have paid their own hookup costs. Smith noted the prospect of 8 to 10 employees at the fabrication shop and said the port authority or JobsOhio might be possible sources of assistance for the hook-up expenses.
Why it matters: a new business joining the JEDD could generate jobs and affect revenue distribution, but it also raises questions about who pays for utility extensions and what conditions the village or township would require.
