Coralville says recreation center schematics 60% complete; total program cost estimated $54 million

Parks & Recreation Director Sherri Proud told the council on Jan. 20 that schematic designs for the Coralville Community Recreation Center are about 60% complete and that cost estimates from the construction manager at-risk will be available by the end of February.
Proud said the core construction estimate is approximately $48,000,000 and that adding construction manager at-risk fees, architectural and geotechnical costs brings the program total to roughly $54,000,000. The preliminary funding approach presented to the council is $40,000,000 from LOST revenue, a committed $14,000,000 contribution from the Iowa City Community School District for the aquatic competition pool and operations, and a $4,000,000 fundraising goal for sponsorships, naming rights and donations.
Proud described the schedule: hand schematic documents to the construction manager in mid-February, receive cost estimates by the end of February, complete design development documents in the spring, and begin grading and utilities with a planned groundbreaking in June or early July if budgets align with the master plan. She said a public open house is scheduled for March 10 before the council meeting to gather additional input.
Proud and City Administrator Kelly Hayworth said the selection committee recommended Russell Construction as the Construction Manager at-Risk and that more detailed scoring, references and selection materials will be included in the Jan. 27 council packet. Proud also noted a desire to incorporate the S.T. Morrison Park portion of the Civic Campus Plan into project planning and to begin a fundraising and ambassador program to support legacy gifts and sponsorships.
Next steps: staff will present construction-manager cost estimates and contract recommendations at upcoming meetings; the council will consider selecting the construction manager and approving design and geotechnical contracts.
