Valparaiso trustees authorize $7,000 Oak Street survey; approve third‑party assessment of disputed Draper property

The Village of Valparaiso Board of Trustees voted Aug. 12 to pay $7,000 for a survey to define property lines among three landowners and the village, after a trustee reported a developer commitment to future land use.
Trustee Turnwall moved to approve the Oak Street survey and Trustee Pierce seconded; the motion carried. Trustees said developer Blazek committed to developing the land within two years and discussed a potential land trade with the village as part of the background to the survey vote.
The board also addressed a separate unkept‑property matter involving the Draper property. On a motion to engage a third‑party engineer/mediator to assess the Draper parcel and report back, the board recorded YAY votes from Chairperson Dan Homes, Trustee Pierce and Trustee Turnwall and an abstention from Trustee Draper; the motion carried.
Turnwall gave an update on progress at the Senior Center during the same agenda item.
Next steps: the village will commission the survey to establish legal property boundaries and the contracted engineer/mediator will evaluate the Draper property and return findings to the board for further action.
