Council approves interlocal wildfire agreement to secure catastrophic-event coverage

Centerville City Council voted unanimously to approve Resolution 2026‑20, entering an interlocal agreement with the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands to participate in a state‑administered catastrophic wildfire insurance arrangement.
Fire marshal Cole Fesler told the council the agreement, which the fire district has handled since 2017, requires participating cities to undertake mitigation, prevention and preparedness work (fuel reduction, volunteer hours, and tracked staff time). In return, if a large wildland fire becomes a state‑delegated incident, the state’s program covers the city's eligible costs rather than leaving them to the municipality.
Fesler noted the city’s assessed participation cost in the current year is modest (he cited roughly $398 for Centerville as the city’s share), and staff confirmed the district and other cities have carryover credits from prior mitigation work. City staff recommended approval to ensure the city is covered should another catastrophic wildfire occur.
The council moved, seconded and approved the resolution on a unanimous roll call. The agreement will be executed by staff and recorded consistent with the city's implementation procedures.
What happens next: staff will execute the signed interlocal agreement and continue coordination with the fire district and state offices on mitigation reporting and crediting.
