Board pulls AASA contract tied to Lily grant, schedules work session to review scope and costs

MSD Warren Township school board members removed an AASA curriculum contract from the consent agenda Tuesday and set a work session for June 23 to review the Lily grant materials and contract details.
Multiple trustees said they were unclear about the contract's phases, deliverables and costs. One board member described the line items as “pretty extensive” and asked for a clearer breakdown of a $79,000 component and associated membership and event fees. Dr. Hansen and other staff said the AASA work (AASA described in the packet as previously operating under Battelle for Kids) is grant‑funded and intended to develop K–12 curriculum tied to new “jog centers” at middle schools and to the district’s Journey of a Graduate framework.
“The primary driver of this is the curriculum for the jog centers,” Dr. Hansen said, explaining the consultant team will help write modules, design learning progressions and support teacher professional development paid through Lily grant dollars. He identified Shane Hagerty and Shannon King as the leads for that work.
Board members pressed staff on implementation timing and whether the contract funds curriculum development only or also implementation support. A trustee asked whether the district would be paying membership fees and whether those fees covered training and conference attendance; staff said the district would hold the membership and that some event registrations were included in the packet.
Because several trustees said they had not reviewed the Lily Phase 3 grant booklet closely, the board agreed to remove the AASA line from the consent agenda and to convene a dedicated work session next Tuesday evening. Administration committed to bring the superintendent, grant documentation and program leads to the work session so trustees can review phases, timelines and dollars before any vote.
The item’s removal did not affect an unrelated Train lease for Raymond Park chillers, which staff said was cleared to continue in the packet. The board will reconvene the AASA discussion after the scheduled work session.
