Proposal to move Park District fiscal year to Jan. 1 fails on 3–2 vote

Commissioner Chan argued a January 1 fiscal year would allow the budget to be finalized before the property tax levy vote and give commissioners an ability to explain any tax changes to residents. “I realize the first year may be a difficult transition but after that it should be ‘clockwork,’” Chan said.
President Knitter and Commissioners Gondek and Ivkovic Kelley opposed the change, saying many peer park districts operate on a May 1 fiscal year to align with seasonal programming and that shifting the fiscal year would impose extra work on staff during a transition year. Attorney Patrick Miner clarified voting procedures for the motion.
The motion failed by roll call vote: Ayes — Commissioners Vescovi and Chan; Nays — Commissioners Ivkovic Kelley, Gondek and President Knitter. No further action on the fiscal year start date was taken at the meeting.
