Revere schools awarded $39,994 grant for genocide curriculum and teacher stipends

Dr. Kelly said the grant — secured by Dr. Porter, who "runs our humanities department" — will fund a Primary Source partnership to develop curriculum units on genocide for ninth- and 11th-grade history classes. The funds will also be used to pay stipends for teachers to collaborate on creating and differentiating lesson plans to meet the needs of diverse learners.
"This was for $39,994," Dr. Kelly said during the meeting, noting that the funds are specific to the curriculum partnership and teacher collaboration. Committee member Ms. Milbury-Ellis asked whether the grant prescribes which genocides must be taught or allows teacher discretion; Dr. Kelly said she believes the Department of Education grant allows teacher discretion but will confirm the scope with Dr. Porter and report back to the committee.
The committee did not take a formal vote on the grant during this meeting; staff committed to confirm whether the grant specifies particular content and to return with that clarification.
