At its Aug. 21 work session the North Haledon Borough Council authorized a conditional offer and background-check process for Officer Nick Hauser to fill a full-time vacancy in the police department. Chief of Police Todd Darby recommended the step, noting Officer Paul Levajac will come off the payroll at the end of January 2025.
The council voted unanimously to allow the department to extend a conditional offer to Hauser and begin the required background investigations. The conditional offer will be followed by a formal hiring vote at the borough council meeting scheduled for Dec. 11, 2024.
Darby told the council the recommendation was intended to ensure continuity in staffing and allow time for the background process before Levajac’s departure. The minutes record that members voted in the affirmative; no individual dissent or abstention was recorded.
The action taken at the work session authorizes personnel processing only; it does not itself constitute the final appointment. The final hiring decision will be made at the Dec. 11 council meeting after completion of background checks and any other pre-employment requirements.
The council adjourned at 8:09 p.m.
