Resident presses North Haledon leaders on development meeting, drainage, chickens and rental questions

At the Borough of North Haledon work session on Sept. 18, resident Walter Stanslaw asked whether the borough had already held the public meeting on a proposed new development. Mayor Randy George said the meeting is scheduled for "next Thursday" at Memorial School at 7:30 p.m. and that the school determines available rooms.
Stanslaw raised three neighborhood concerns in turn. He asked about two catch basins behind his property that are washing out and said he has been filling holes himself; he suggested the existing 18-inch pipe may be too small. Mayor Randy George said he did not believe the repair was the resident’s responsibility, that the borough engineer would be asked to inspect the site, and asked Stanslaw to leave his address and phone number so staff could follow up.
Stanslaw also asked about the borough’s stance on backyard chickens. Mayor George said he recently sent an ordinance to the Board of Health to consider allowing chickens (no roosters) and indicated any formal action on that ordinance likely would not occur until next year.
Finally, Stanslaw asked about renting out a second-floor mother-daughter unit; the mayor directed him to the building department contact, noting Jimmy Booth could answer questions about separate gas meters and rental rules.
The council opened and closed the public comment period by voice motion; Council Member Donna Puglisi moved to open the floor, Council Member George Pomianek seconded, and a later motion to close public comment was moved by Council Member Bruce O. Iacobelli and seconded by Council Member Puglisi. The minutes record that all members voted in the affirmative for those procedural motions.
The council did not take further action on the items at the meeting; the mayor or staff were recorded as the points of contact for follow-up.
