Van Buren County sets public hearing for sale of three parcels near Farmington after appraisals

Van Buren County supervisors on April 28 approved Resolution #04-28-2025 to begin the process of selling three county-owned parcels on the northeasterly side of Farmington that were initially acquired for road right-of-way. Auditor Lisa Plecker told the board the parcels were originally bought for Project No. S-2509 and were surveyed and split into Auditors Parcels A, B and C; appraisals completed in July 2024 estimated fair market values at $1,292 for Parcel A, $310 for Parcel B and $590 for Parcel C.
The resolution, adopted by roll call (Meek Aye, Waugh Aye, House Aye), sets a public hearing for 9:05 a.m. July 14, 2025, in the supervisors office and requires certified-mail notice to specific individuals and entities identified as having previously sold the land to the county. The county will also publish notice in the Van Buren County Register on May 15, 2025, consistent with Iowa Code Section 306.23s requirements to contact families of the original sellers and provide them a 60-day window to make an offer.
The action does not finalize a sale; it initiates the statutory notification and hearing process required before disposal of unused road right-of-way under Iowa law. Interested parties may submit comments at the July 14 hearing or otherwise pursue offers within the notice period.
