The Van Buren County Board of Supervisors on April 14 authorized a $1,000 contribution from National Opioid Settlement funds to support a proposed community improvement project in Keosauqua and approved a county-hospital contract to address inmate medical billing.
Dr. Matt Manning introduced a proposal to convert an abandoned Little League field into courts for tennis, pickleball, bocce and a full basketball court and said he planned to pursue a Community Attraction and Tourism (CAT) grant that requires local financial support. Kris Rankin, director of the SAFE Coalition and the county's administrator for National Opioid Settlement funds, told the board that funds are available under 'Other Treatment, Prevention, & Other Strategies.' The board approved issuing $1,000 from those funds and authorized the chairman to sign a letter of support for the CAT grant application. The motion passed unanimously.
Separately, representatives from Van Buren County Hospital explained billing constraints tied to the hospital's Critical Access Hospital status and described a proposed agreement to charge the county 40% of inmate-related service charges when the inmate does not have insurance beyond Iowa Medicaid. Following discussion, the board authorized the sheriff to sign the final inmate-services contract with Van Buren County Hospital. Ayes: 3.
The meeting also included a personnel action appointing Christy Brisley of Farmington as a part-time dispatcher/jailer effective April 1, 2025 at $23.83 per hour on the sheriff's recommendation.
