Van Buren County adopts $11.4 million FY2026 budget, sets departmental appropriations

Chairman Mark Meek opened the budget hearing and County Auditor Lisa Plecker reviewed the proposed budget and available handouts. After the board received no oral or written public comment, Supervisor House moved and Supervisor Waugh seconded that the hearing be closed and the budget adopted. The measure passed on a roll call vote: Meek — Aye; Waugh — Nay; House — Aye.
The adopted FY2026 budget totals $11,395,159 and includes $1,023,577 in transfers. Major service-area maxima established in the resolution include Roads & Transportation at $5,512,000; County Environment & Education at $621,600; Physical Health & Social Services at $914,388; and Public Safety & Legal Services at $1,902,044. The County Engineer's total appropriation was set at $6,262,000.
The resolution also set departmental maximum appropriations for offices including the Board of Supervisors, Auditor, Treasurer, County Attorney and Sheriff, and established limits for capital projects and nonprogram current expenditures.
The board's formal adoption is recorded in Resolution #04-14-2025A. The budget takes effect for FY2026 as adopted and will guide departmental spending limits and transfers for the coming fiscal year.
Procedural note: the board approved the minutes from prior meetings (March 24 and two March 31 sessions) at the start of the April 14 meeting, and the budget hearing was opened at 9:02 AM and closed at 9:23 AM before the formal vote.
