Eric Long briefed the Board on a resilience action plan under development that could include an advisory/review panel and partnerships with county, state and federal agencies. Long described a hypothetical based on Hurricane Milton topography, saying a 10–12' storm surge could have flooded approximately 45%–55% of the community. He urged a proactive, multiagency approach that may take up to a decade to implement and asked the CDD to designate Board and staff representatives to coordinate as needed; consensus was that Mr. Long and newly appointed supervisor Keith Merrill will assist and Mr. Krebs is authorized to provide support.
Tony Pires noted that the Army Corps of Engineers has presented ideas in neighboring Collier County should funding become available. The Board discussed the need to consider measures for both commercial and residential buildings and the limitations and roles of local, county, and state authorities. The Board authorized staff involvement and liaison support as the initiative develops.
