Residents urge pause on proposed data center, citing water, light, noise and economic concerns

During the public‑input portion of the June 16 meeting, two residents raised concerns about a data center proposed for the Cannon Falls area.
Laura Lamore told the council she opposed approving the data center as currently proposed and asked that the city pause the project until sustainability and design issues are better resolved. Lamore said data centers are resource hungry and raised specific concerns including water shortages and contamination, constant bright lighting, noise effects on wildlife and residents, potential electrical strain and higher utility costs. She warned that some development firms make sustainability promises that are later dropped and urged caution.
Tim Deemer also addressed the council, saying he had questions about the project and referenced comments made at the planning commission; he said he was frustrated and requested more opportunity to ask questions and receive answers.
There was no council action on the data-center issue at the meeting; presenters and staff did not offer new technical details or approvals during public comment.
