Quartzsite council approves consent agenda, two appointments and America 250 mural ribbon-cutting

The Quartzsite Common Council on May 26 approved a series of routine items and a community-event request during a meeting at the Quartzsite Community Center.

Consent agenda: The council approved accounts payable checks 54655–54673 totaling $62,592.05 and payroll checks 54645–54654 totaling $107,545.89 for a grand total of $170,137.94. Vice Mayor Carrie Ammon moved to approve the consent agenda; the motion carried on a voice vote with no nays or abstentions recorded.

Planning & Zoning appointment: Council accepted the Planning & Zoning Commission’s recommendation and appointed Craig Cochran to a term ending June 1, 2029. Cochran introduced himself to the council, describing prior public-service experience and his interest in planning work: "I think planning commission is probably one of the key areas of being able to take the priorities of the city council, study them, learn about them, bring back solutions," Cochran said. There was no public opposition recorded and the council approved the appointment by motion.

Municipal Property Corporation reappointment: The council reappointed Mark Goldberg to the Municipal Property Corporation board for a term expiring June 1, 2029. Council clarified that members of that nonprofit body are not town employees and do not receive compensation. One council member stated they were related to Goldberg and recused themselves from deliberation; the reappointment was approved by motion.

America 250 mural ribbon-cutting: Council discussed a requested ribbon-cutting ceremony for the America 250 mural at the Quartzsite Community Center on July 4. Several members raised concerns about heat and whether children would attend a morning ceremony; staff noted the VFW requested a 10 a.m. start. Council voted to allow the requested July 4, 10:00 a.m. ribbon-cutting.
