Mlean argued automated enforcement could improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists in Bedford, which he said has a higher casualty rate for vulnerable road users than neighboring towns. "A little bit of automated traffic enforcement would actually be in order," he said.
Board members expressed a range of views. Supporters highlighted safety benefits and noted that municipal deployment cannot be used to profit; opponents raised privacy concerns, distrust of legislative safeguards and worry about precedent and mission creep. One member moved that the board endorse the bills, but the motion failed for lack of a second; the board took no formal position.
Why this matters: Automated enforcement remains controversial: advocates cite crash reduction and enforcement of traffic laws; critics cite surveillance, fairness and legislative safeguards. The Select Board declined to take a legislative position at this time but said it would consider local deployment if the state authorizes municipalities and the board decides to act later.
