The New Castle County Boards and Commissions Subcommittee on June 16 heard two nominations for county advisory bodies and deferred formal votes until next Tuesday.
Councilwoman George introduced Ryan Wilson as a nominee for the New Castle County Ethics Commission, saying she had worked with him in the community and “have always been impressed with how he handles issues.” Wilson told the committee he wanted to get more involved in local government, saying, “I started asking myself, how can I get involved more on a local level?” He said he was drawn to the Ethics Commission to learn how government works and to help “make sure that the standards that we need to uphold are being upheld.”
The committee also heard a nomination for Beatrice “Betty” Areola to the Claymont Design Review Advisory Committee. A council member who introduced her described the Claymont Hometown Overlay District program as a driver of redevelopment that has attracted “millions of dollars in new investment” and endorsed Areola’s experience. Areola, who identified herself as a project manager with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, said she has worked with the Corps for 17 years, holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and has performed structural inspections on several local bridges. She said she has been a county resident since 2018 and wanted to apply her engineering and planning skills to the Claymont community.
Why it matters: The Ethics Commission reviews questions of conduct and local ethics rules, while the Claymont Design Review Advisory Committee provides advisory opinions tied to the Claymont Hometown Overlay District and to local redevelopment efforts. Both nominations were presented and supported in committee discussion, but the subcommittee did not take final votes on either appointment.
Next steps: Chair Dee Durham told nominees their biographies were shared with committee members and that votes would occur at the subcommittee’s next meeting on Tuesday. Nominees were advised they did not need to attend next week’s meeting unless requested.
