Broken Bow City Council unanimously approves consent agenda, two board appointments and temporary closures

At its June 25 meeting the Broken Bow City Council approved the consent agenda including $253,532.30 in bills and payroll, appointed Paul Proctor to the Airport Authority and Steven Fricke to the Park Board, granted temporary parking-closure authority to a county supervisor through Sept. 1, and OK’d a July 26 street closure for a youth fundraiser.
Broken Bow — The Broken Bow City Council met in regular session on June 25, 2024, at the Broken Bow Municipal Auditorium and unanimously approved the consent agenda, which included the minutes of the June 11 meeting and bills to date totaling $253,532.30.
Councilmember Russ Smith moved to approve the consent agenda; Paul Holland seconded. The roll-call vote was recorded as Smith, Wassom, Myers and Holland voting aye; none voted no. The bills list included a bi-weekly payroll of $89,919.58 and multiple line items detailed in the meeting minutes, yielding a total of $253,532.30.
The council approved two appointments. Chris Myers moved, and Smith seconded, the appointment of Paul Proctor to the Broken Bow Airport Authority Board for a term ending December 2029; the motion passed unanimously. Luke Wassom moved, and Smith seconded, the appointment of Steven Fricke to the Broken Bow Park Board for a term ending February 2026; that motion also passed unanimously.
The council granted temporary authority, by a motion from Paul Holland seconded by Luke Wassom, to Custer County Supervisor Dwain Bryner to close parking spaces on the east side of the Custer County Courthouse (between South D Street and South E Street) on an as-needed basis to protect the public during a stair replacement project. The extension of that temporary authority runs through Sept. 1, 2024, and was approved by unanimous vote.
The council also approved a temporary closure of South D Street from South 8th Avenue to South 9th Avenue on July 26, 2024, from approximately 4:00 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. for the Broken Bow Youth Sports Club Ball Drop Fundraiser and an accompanying beer garden. That motion, moved by Russ Smith and seconded by Paul Holland, passed unanimously.
In Mayor and council comments, Mayor Rod Sonnichsen thanked the Broken Bow Youth Organization (DYO) for its work with local youth. Councilmember Russ Smith praised the organization, saying it “means the world to the local youth in our community.” Councilmember Paul Holland thanked the City Streets Department and the DYO for keeping parks and fields in good condition during a recent softball tournament.
The council adjourned at 6:07 p.m.; the motion to adjourn was moved by Luke Wassom and seconded by Chris Myers and carried by unanimous vote.
The meeting minutes state that notice of the meeting was given in advance as required by Nebraska statutes and that all proceedings were open to the public. The minutes were attested by City Clerk Jennifer Waterhouse.
