Lindenhurst board absorbs refuse company’s 2% increase, holds rates steady through 2021

The Lindenhurst Village Board voted Feb. 22 to absorb a 2% rate increase from Groot Industries rather than pass the cost on to customers, keeping refuse and recycling rates at 0% for the period Feb. 1 through Dec. 31, 2021.
Groot Industries notified the Village of a contractual 2% increase effective Jan. 1, 2021. The Finance Committee recommended that the Village absorb the increase for 2021 instead of adjusting resident bills at this time. The Village’s usual rate-adjustment date is May 1.
Trustee Pat Dunham moved to approve Ordinance 21-2-2188 setting refuse and recycling rates; Trustee Patty Chybowski seconded. The six trustees present — Bill Anderson, Pat Dunham, Patty Chybowski, Dawn Suchy, Dawn Czarny and Heath Rosten — voted aye and the ordinance passed.
The board did not specify a funding source to cover the absorbed increase during the meeting; officials said the decision followed the Finance Committee recommendation but did not enumerate budget offsets or long-term rate plans on the Feb. 22 agenda. The ordinance sets the service rate adjustment at 0% for the remainder of 2021.
