Commission highlights wetlands training and local planning items

Staff reported progress on the 919 King Street restoration and commissioners recommended a deep-wetlands training course they completed will be offered as a local workshop supported by a New Haven Garden Club grant.
During the June 18 meeting, staff reported that the applicant for the 919 King Street restoration obtained the neighboring property owner’s permission as required and is moving forward with restoration work under the commission’s prior approval.
Staff member Lynette and two commissioners described recent completion of a deep wetlands training course that covers wetland delineation, relevant legal concepts and best practices; Lynette said she will adapt the course material into a local workshop this summer supported by a grant from the New Haven Garden Club and encouraged other commission members to take the virtual course. Commissioners discussed time expectations (the course may require eight to 16 hours depending on whether participants take notes and use review sessions) and a browser compatibility issue that was resolved by switching to Firefox.
The training is expected to improve the commission’s technical capacity for delineation and permit review and to earn the commission sustainable-community credit if additional members complete the certification.
