Eight homeowners express interest in National Register nominations; commission to consult district architect

The Old Saybrook Historic District Commission heard June 16 that eight homeowners have expressed interest in nominations to the National Register of Historic Places and that staff will continue coordination and technical review.
Staff told commissioners she had been in contact with an outside advisor (referred to as the district architect) who recommended visiting the area to advise on where district boundaries might be drawn. Four of the interested homes are adjacent to the existing South Green area and several others are nearby, meaning an expansion of boundaries may be feasible if a sufficient number of owners support nomination.
Commissioners discussed grant opportunities to support nomination work but noted that some grant programs require matching funds and fundraising or in-kind support will be necessary. Staff agreed to keep the eight homeowners apprised of next steps and to notify neighbors if broader outreach is warranted to assemble a district nomination.
Next steps: staff will arrange for the district architect to visit, update interested homeowners about the schedule and assess whether a formal district nomination process — which may require neighbor agreement and a multi-step public process — is appropriate for the identified clusters.
