Firefighter suspended after driving incident damages township fire station

The Norwich Township trustees voted to suspend Firefighter Scott Skeldon for three working days and to require him to assume liability for repairs after his privately owned vehicle struck the front of the township fire station in what trustees described as an act of “horseplay.” Durland L. Workman, chairman, and other trustees discussed the incident at an informal disciplinary meeting that concluded with a formal record entered into Skeldon’s personnel file.
At the meeting the board imposed a three‑day suspension without pay covering September 9, 12 and 15, 1987; trustees also restricted Skeldon from answering alarms or visiting the station until he reported for duty on September 18 at 8:00 a.m. The disciplinary record will remain in his file until the trustees determine otherwise.
Workman said the board was willing to discuss the matter with a union representative if Skeldon requested it; Skeldon made no comment at the time, according to the minutes. The trustees said the action followed an informal hearing in which Skeldon left the room for deliberations and the board then announced the sanctions.
