The Buckeye Union School District Board of Trustees voted 5–0 on Aug. 20 to set Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2026, as the first day of school for the 2026–27 academic year. Assistant Superintendent Jacqueline McHaney told trustees the Governing Board is responsible for selecting the first day and recommended Aug. 12 to align with the high school district calendar.
Board Member Scott Masten moved to approve the recommended date; Board Member Melissa Keyzer seconded. The motion carried unanimously. McHaney said the administration and the Buckeye Teachers Association will continue negotiations on the final calendar and return a finalized calendar to the Board in September.
The decision formalizes the district’s start date well ahead of the 2026–27 school year and allows staff to continue coordinating calendars and logistics with feeder high schools and bargaining partners. The Board’s next regular meeting is scheduled for Sept. 3, 2025, when the administration expects to present the final calendar following negotiations.
