CDEB approves staff contract renewals, retirements and hires; space study finds capacity for tuition placements

Walworth County’s Children with Disabilities Education Board voted unanimously May 20 to renew certified staff contracts, accept three retirements, hire two new teachers, approve a space-availability study projecting enrollment growth to 131 students and approve Lakeland School Policy po8500 (Food Services).
The Walworth County Children with Disabilities Education Board unanimously approved a package of personnel and operational items at its May 20 meeting, including certified staff contract renewals, three retirements, two new hires, a space-availability study indicating room for tuition placements, and a Food Services policy.
Director of Special Education Matthew Huettl asked the board for permission to engage current certified Lakeland School employees for the 2026–2027 school year. Supervisor Kenneth Monroe moved to approve continued employment of current certified staff; Supervisor Joanne Laufenberg seconded. The motion carried 5-0.
Huettl then announced three retirements — Special Education Teachers Sara Lilla, Daniel Lannan and Shelly Budziszek. Secretary Kathy Ingersoll moved to approve the retirements; Supervisor Joseph H. Schaefer seconded. The motion carried 5-0.
The board approved two new hires, Sean Clark and Yahayra Martinez, on a motion by Monroe and second by Laufenberg that passed 5-0.
Huettl presented the final space-availability study used to determine whether Lakeland School has openings to accept tuition-based students from outside Walworth County. He reported current enrollment of 127 students and a projected enrollment of 131 for the 2026–2027 school year, and said the projection will continue to be reviewed as additional data becomes available. "The space available study process is done to determine if Lakeland School has openings to accept tuition based students outside of Walworth County," Huettl said. The board approved the study findings on a motion by Secretary Ingersoll, seconded by Supervisor Monroe; the motion carried 5-0. Huettl said the finalized analysis will be presented to the County Board in July 2026 and will determine tuition placement availability for the first trimester of 2026–2027.
The board also approved Lakeland School Policy po8500 (Food Services) on a motion by Supervisor Monroe, seconded by Secretary Ingersoll; the motion carried 5-0. Huettl provided a summary of other director-level items including April donations, Dynamic Learning Maps (DLM) state assessment completion, departmental budget compliance and partner school district progress.
The board confirmed its next meeting for Wednesday, June 17, 2026 at 4:30 p.m., and Chair Brian Holt adjourned the meeting at 5:21 p.m.
