South Thomaston conservation commission seeks replacements after resignation, plans staggered associate terms

The South Thomaston Conservation Commission opened its meeting with the announcement that a long-serving member, Linda, has submitted a resignation, creating a vacancy and leaving the commission without a secretary.

The chair called the meeting to order at 5:01 p.m. and moved discussion of reappointments and the resignation to the top of the agenda. Commissioners agreed to ask the select board to stagger associate-member terms — assigning one-, two- and three-year terms among the three associates so not all seats come up for reappointment every year. The chair said this would create a “ladder” so the commission avoids repeating full reappointments annually.

Commissioners also discussed short-term arrangements for meeting records after the resignation. One member volunteered to annotate meeting minutes live if commissioners submit brief notes after each item so the commission maintains a usable record without a designated secretary. The group formally moved and approved the prior meeting’s minutes by voice vote.

Members asked colleagues to suggest prospects to fill the vacant commissioner seat. The chair and others thanked the departing member for her service and said they may ask her for occasional help with posters and outreach materials even after she steps down.

The commission decided to draft language asking the select board to implement staggered associate-member terms and to continue outreach to recruit a new commissioner and someone willing to take minutes.

The commission adjourned after covering additional agenda items, including land-use warrant articles and program updates.
