The Gonzales City Council on June 15 accepted the police department's AB 481 annual report and directed staff to notice a public hearing for July 20 to consider readoption of the city's equipment policy.
Staff explained that state law requires jurisdictions to identify and publish inventories of equipment that could be considered military in nature and to adopt policies governing acquisition, use and maintenance. The report added a grant-funded drone authorized by the council in February; staff said the report includes flight counts and maintenance costs for that drone and for others the city owns.
The staff presentation characterized the city's holdings as modest compared with larger jurisdictions and listed items such as rifles and ammunition. Staff noted one specialty item (a bean-bag deployment device) remains in inventory though it has not been deployed "in years." The council voted unanimously to accept the AB 481 report and instructed staff to notice the July 20 hearing for consideration of the report and the related ordinance.
Mayor Pro Tem said the July 20 hearing will allow the council to consider readoption of the ordinance and reminded the public that the report will be posted and noticed in advance of that date. No public testimony was offered during the meeting on this item.
Next steps: staff will post the report and publish the hearing notice at least 30 days before the July 20 meeting.
