Gonzales's new community center wins two construction awards; council, partners praised project delivery

The Gonzales City Council celebrated the Dennis and Janice Capra Community Center on June 15 after staff and the project's lead consultant said the facility recently received two project achievement awards.

Luis Flores of Harrison Associates told the council the project won the Construction Management Association of America Northern California chapter award in the vertical construction category for projects up to $49 million and a project achievement award from the APWA Monterey Bay chapter. Flores said the recognition reflects the quality of construction and partnerships among city leaders, staff, designers, contractors and community stakeholders.

Council members and staff singled out the city's youth council for helping shape the facility's design. Carmen (City Manager) told the council the center was delivered within the established budget and will be programmed by the Boys and Girls Club. Mayor Pro Tem thanked Flores and staff and invited the project team to a group photograph with award recipients.

Council members also described recent finishing work at the site: staff said crews slurry-sealed and will restripe the driveway and parking lot with thermal plastic paint so the site is ready for public use. Several council members noted the city is still completing small punch-list items and some USDA-related financing tasks.

The presentation included recognition of individual project team members and a request that awards be placed permanently at the new center. No council action was required; the item was a ceremonial presentation and public comment period produced no comments specific to the awards.

The council moved on to regular business after the photo opportunity.
