Plymouth Public Library seeks $70,530 to digitize Old Colony Memorial microfilm

Julie Burrey of the Plymouth Public Library presented Article 28, a Community Preservation Committee request for $70,530 to digitize roughly 300 rolls of 35mm microfilm of the Old Colony Memorial and make the archive searchable online.
Burrey said the microfilm is about 30 years old and digitization would prevent further scratching and preserve access; she said town departments and researchers would use the searchable resource. Committee members asked about equipment and scope: Burrey said two pieces of equipment currently exist for using the microfilm and that digitizing the run would provide a complete resource. Mark Snyder questioned whether the newer paper offered the same historical focus as older runs; Ms. Richards, who described experience in archiving, said microfilm is durable but digitization offers public access despite differences in longevity.
Mark Snyder moved and Christine Richards seconded a motion to recommend Article 28 to Town Meeting. The committee voted 11 yes, 1 no (Ms. Reitman opposed) and 0 abstentions; the recommendation moves the appropriation to the Spring Town Meeting warrant.
