Story County approves a package of grants to local nonprofits and routine budget transfers

On June 16 the Story County Board of Commissioners approved a slate of grant resolutions to nonprofit organizations and authorized intra‑budget transfers to realign FY25–26 funding.
Staff explained that state statute NRS 244.1505 requires the board to make grants to nonprofits by resolution and to specify the purpose and any conditions. The board approved Resolution 26‑818 granting Community Chest, Inc. $730,997 for health, human services and education programs (an increase driven largely by a new $250,000 request to replace lost federal funding). The board also approved grants to the Historic Fourth Ward School Foundation (resolution 26‑819, not to exceed $130,000), St. Mary's Art Center (26‑821, $109,000), University of Nevada Reno Story County Extension (26‑822, $55,000), the 109 Comstock Ladies (26‑823, $6,000), Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8071 (26‑824, $12,000), and other organizations following staff review.
Staff also presented transfers within the FY25–26 budget pursuant to NRS 354.5980 totaling $679,400, including contingency allocations for settlements and unforeseen wage and benefit needs, and special revenue fund adjustments; the transfers were presented in detail and approved unanimously.
What it means: County support will flow to local social services, cultural institutions and community organizations for the coming fiscal year, and the approved transfers reallocate existing budget authority to cover settlements, overtime and emergent departmental needs.
Next steps: County staff will execute the resolutions, distribute grant agreements and monitor spending conditions; controllers will carry out the approved transfers and report back as required.
