Board members reviewed options to finance a new fire truck at the April 15 budget meeting and agreed to include a placeholder debt‑service amount in the draft budget while final delivery and loan timing are worked out.
Finance estimates presented two repayment scenarios borrowing from the town’s own reserves: a four‑year term and a five‑year term with interest rates estimated near 5.3%. The presenter said first‑year interest would be roughly $16,000 under the four‑year scenario with a principal placeholder of about $70,000 to reflect annual repayment obligations; together those placeholders produce a preliminary debt‑service line of $112,545 to reserve against a potential timing gap if the truck arrives before July 1.
Members discussed the tradeoffs—shorter term means higher annual principal but lower total interest, while a longer term spreads principal payments but increases total interest paid—then agreed to plug the higher placeholder into the budget and adjust the number on the floor once final invoices and delivery timing are confirmed.
The board asked staff to finalize vendor delivery timing and loan paperwork and to return with exact principal and interest figures for final budget approval at the next meeting.
