Springfield School Committee votes to enter executive session on four collective-bargaining talks

The Springfield School Committee voted to enter an executive session at its June 18 meeting to discuss strategy related to four collective-bargaining negotiations, the committee announced.
The motion, made by Ms. Hurst and seconded by Ms. Valentine, said the committee would meet under Massachusetts open-meeting law to discuss bargaining strategy for the Springfield Public Health Nurses (represented by United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1459), Springfield school bus monitors (represented by the National Association of Government Employees), Springfield school crossing guards (also represented by NAGE) and the Springfield Administrators Association (MTA/NEA). The clerk read the four items into the record before the roll call.
The items listed and their contract terms as read into the record were: a successor contract for Springfield Public Health Nurses, UF-CW Local 1459, for July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2028; a successor contract for Springfield School Bus Monitors represented by the National Association of Government Employees for July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2029; successor contract terms for Springfield School Crossing Guards with NAGE covering July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026 and July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2029; and successor contract negotiations with the Springfield Administrators Association (MTA/NEA) (terms not otherwise specified in the record).
By roll call the members present voted to enter executive session; the clerk recorded Ms. Valentine, Ms. Crawford, Ms. Hurst, Ms. Roneller and Mayor Sarno as voting yes. Mr. Gomez and School Committee Woman Barbara Gresham were recorded as absent. The chair declared the matter passed and said votes may be taken in executive session and the school committee would not reconvene in open session to complete the agenda.
After the roll call the body moved to adjourn the open session; that motion was seconded and approved by roll call. The committee departed into executive session where bargaining strategy and any related votes will be handled outside the public portion of the meeting.
Action taken at the open-session portion of the meeting was procedural: authorization to enter executive session to discuss collective bargaining under Massachusetts open-meeting law. No contract terms were adopted or made public during the open session.
