Council reviews engineering proposal to convert clinic space for law enforcement, delays decision

The Crawford City Council discussed a proposal Nov. 24 to renovate the northwest corner of the hospital clinic for possible use as a law enforcement office but took no immediate action.
Jack Baker presented design-service options from initial concept through construction documents and bidding. Baker said smaller-area renovations raise the cost per square foot and flagged work items including a restroom remodel, entryway changes, installation of a ramp and separation between the law enforcement area and public entry. "This is one of those projects that anytime you do a smaller area of renovation, the cost per square foot does go up," Baker said.
Baker and council members reviewed preliminary cost figures: approximately $49,500 for non-electrical engineering work and about $39,000 for the electrical redesign being handled with Paris Engineers, a combined pre-bid estimate near $90,000. Council members noted existing code compliance concerns such as paper-wrapped wire in conduit and discussed potential savings from combining multiple building projects. The council declined to proceed until members can compare bids and receive additional detail.
No formal motion to accept a design contract was taken; next steps are for staff to circulate and compare bids and return recommendations to the council.
